Mixed weekend for Jehan in Austria

After the high of earning his first podium in Formula Cars in Race 1, Jehan Daruvala of the Sahara Force India Academy, had to be content with the flip side of the sport in his remaining races. Race 2 of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC in Austria, saw Jehan drive another brilliant race to finish 4th, while Race 3 went all wrong as the 16 year old suffered a DNF (Did not Finish).

In Race 2 Jehan made an excellent start from 3rd. By the third corner Jehan had overtaken Deletraz & moved into 2nd. Jehan then focused on trying to get away, but Deletraz proved to have better pace. The battle between them allowed Alex Gill in 4th to slowly close in. Jehan then had a choice – either let Deletraz pass & settle for a confirmed 3rd position, or continue fighting with the championship leader & gain some valuable experience. Jehan chose the later & continued to defend brilliantly for 18 out of the scheduled 25 minutes. A small mistake by Jehan & an excellent move by Deletraz at the 1st corner, saw Jehan fall down to 3rd.

With Deletraz being quicker, Jehan knew he had practically no time to regain his position. He attempted a move after the 2nd corner but unfortunately did not succeed. Jehan continued to push hard & ran wide allowing Alex Gill to climb into third. With little time remaining, Alex drove well & managed to hold Jehan off, forcing him to finish in 4th. “After my excellent start,  I decided to go on an aggressive strategy. I learnt a lot racing with the series leader – Deletraz. It would have been fantastic to be on the podium 2 races in a row, but 4th is not so bad considering I learnt a lot”

In Race 3, Jehan started 12th on the grid. He made another good start & was one of 4 cars going into the 1st corner together. Unfortunately he was hit & although small, the impact was enough to break his suspension by the 2nd corner. Jehan’s weekend thus ended on a disappointing note with his car not moving beyond 2 corners in race 3.

“Race 3 was disappointing from a points perspective. However, there are many positives that I will take away from this weekend, which is helping me tremendously in this very steep learning curve. I now look forward to the Alps series as a guest driver in a month” said Jehan, reflecting on the event.

The DNF cost Jehan a lot of points & he now falls down to 2nd in the Rookie Standings & 6th overall.
